Good Morning Students.
Welcome back!!
In our last class we learnt that The Northern Plains are divided into three river basins. We also discussed The Ganga basin in detail. Today we will discuss The Brahmaputra and The Satluj basin in detail.
By the end of the class you will be able to:
- List the names of states that lie in these basins.
- Recall the main crops grown in these regions.
- Appreciate the importance of the Bhakra-Nangal Dam.
THE BRAHMAPUTRA BASIN
- The Brahmaputra basin originates (begins or starts flowing) in Tibet (a region in East Asia).
- It is known as Tsangpo there.
- It enters India in Arunachal Pradesh and flows through Assam.
- It flows southwards and enters Bangladesh(one of India's neighbouring countries).
- Before falling into the Bay of Bengal, the river Brahmaputra joins the river Ganga to form the Ganga-Brahmaputra Delta.
- This region receives heavy rainfall sometimes resulting in floods.
- The fertile soil is excellent for growing crops like rice and jute.

THE SATLUJ BASIN
- The Satluj basin also originates in Tibet and enters India through the Shipki La pass in Himanchal Pradesh. Beas is the main tributary of Satluj.
SHIPKI LA PASS
- Haryana and Punjab are the two states that lie in the Satluj basin.
- Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala and Ludhiana are some of the important towns situated along its course.
- The main crops produced include wheat, rice, cotton and sugar cane.
- The Bhakra-Nangal Dam is built on this river and is used to provide electricity and water for irrigation(the supply of water to land or crops to help growth).
