1. The Himalaya is the highest mountain range and the Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world.
2. The lower Himalayas are also known as the Shiwaliks.
3. In North India, the lower range marks the end of the mountains and the beginning of the plains .
4. The Ganga originates in the Gangotri Glacier.
5. The Satluj enters India at the Shipki La pass.
C. Answer the following in brief.
Q1. Arrange the three ranges of Himalayas from north to south.
Ans. The Greater Himalayas or the Himadri are in the north, followed by The Middle Himalayas or the Himachal and then the southernmost range known as The Outer Himalayas or the Shiwaliks.
Q3. What is the extent of the Northern Plains?
Ans. The Northern Plains extend 3,200 km from east to west and are 150 to 300 km wide spanning from Punjab in the west to parts of Assam in the east.
Q4. What is a river basin?
Ans. A river basin is a large low-lying area watered by a river and its tributaries.
Q5. Why are the Northern Plains important for India?
Ans. The Northern Plains are important for India because of the following reasons:
(a) They have fertile soil which is needed to grow crops.
(b) Flat land good for roads and railways.
(c) Good irrigational facilities for the crops.
