Q1. Where is terrace farming practised in the Himalayas and why?
Ans. Terrace farming is practised in the Middle Himalayas or The Himachal. It is a very old agricultural practice used to grow crops on the steep sides of mountains. This process grows crops requiring large amount of water. The steps or terraces collect and distribute water while reducing soil erosion.

Q2. Differentiate between the Greater Himalayas and the Middle Himalayas.

Ans. Terai is a dense marshy land. Crops like rice, wheat ans sugar cane  are grown in this region.

Q4. State five reasons why Himalayas are important for us.
Ans. The Himalayas are important to us because:

  • It forms a natural boundary between India and neighbours like China.
  • It protects our country from the cold winds of the north.
  • It prevents the rain-bearing winds from leaving the country.
  • Almost all the rivers of India have their source in the Himalayas.
  • The Himalayan slopes have dense forests. These forests are a storehouse of Timber and medicinal herbs.
Q5. What is a delta? Describe the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta.
Ans. A delta is an area of flat land shaped like a triangle where a river divides into smaller rivers as it goes into the sea.
The Ganga-Brahmaputra delta also known as the Sunderban delta is situated in West Bengal state in India and Bangladesh, where the rivers Ganga and Brahmaputra fall into the Bay of Bengal. It is the world's largest delta and the most fertile regions in the world.

Q6. Why are the Northern Plains one of the most well-populated regions of India?
Ans. The Northern Plains are densely populated because of the following reasons:
(i) They have better climatic conditions which is suitable of human livelihood.
(ii) The land is fertile here which supports agriculture.
(iii) A good network of roads and railways has also been built here.
